Timberwolves’ backs are firmly planted against the wall. Can they at least delay their season’s end?

Published Thu, 06 Mar 2025 23:39:55 GMT

The Timberwolves were frustrated, maybe a little embarrassed and clearly stunned after Friday’s Game 3 defeat to Denver that left Minnesota staring down the barrel of a potential first-round sweep in the NBA playoffs.Anthony Edwards left the locker room after the game without even speaking to the media.A team that entered the playoffs on a high after winning a number of critical games to close out the regular season and dominating its play-in victory over Oklahoma City, the Wolves are suddenly missing their mojo.“Yeah, I didn’t think we’d be here. Honestly, I didn’t think anybody in this room did,” Wolves veteran guard Mike Conley said. “We had been playing really good basketball, playing hard, and doing a lot of really, really good things to get into the playoffs. So, it’s frustrating. Guys are upset.”But the pity party must be short lived. Because the fate of Minnesota’s season, which was originally expected to extend at ...

The Hotline mailbag is published every week. Send questions to [email protected] and include ‘mailbag’ in the subject line — or hit me on Twitter: @WilnerHotline.Some questions have been edited for clarity and brevity. If a worst-case scenario occurs and one of the Four Corners schools takes the Big 12 offer and two more follow, what actually becomes of the conference and what happens to Washington and Oregon if the Big Ten is not ready to expand? — @trintranGreat question, and one that we have contemplated often over the past 10 months. There is no indication the majority of Big Ten schools are interested in adding new members in the short term and thereby detonating the Pac-12. Could that sentiment change if the Pac-12 implosion is triggered elsewhere, with a handful of schools leaving for the Big 12? Perhaps. And in that event, the new members would assuredly enter the Big Ten at reduced rates. We are deeply skeptical that  Fox, NBC and CBS would pay an additio...

Akron temporarily bans use of nonlethal force on protestors

Published Thu, 06 Mar 2025 23:39:55 GMT

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Authorities in an Ohio city have agreed to temporarily bar the use of tear gas, pepper spray and other types of nonlethal force against nonviolent protestors, a move that comes after it was sued following a protest over a grand jury’s decision to not indict police officers who shot and killed a Black motorist.Akron officials and lawyers for the Akron Bail Fund — a group that supports protesters — reached the agreement late Friday after a federal court session that lasted for several hours. Bail fund officials had sought a temporary restraining order to block the use of nonlethal force, but the two sides instead agreed to a 14-day restriction that allows the litigation and negotiations to continue. The legal action came about after a protest Wednesday in which police used tear gas and pepper spray to disperse protesters after the gathering was deemed an unlawful assembly.Akron has seen a few protests after a state grand jury on Monday declined to indict eight ...

SEATTLE (AP) — For the first time in more than 100 years, games contested in the quest for the Stanley Cup will be returning to Seattle. Returning? Yes, returning. Surely you remember the 1919 Stanley Cup Final between the Seattle Metropolitans and Montreal Canadiens. It seems unlikely anyone who was at the Seattle Ice Arena for those games 104 years ago will be under the roof of Climate Pledge Arena on Saturday night when the Kraken host the Colorado Avalanche in Game 3 (10 p.m. ET, TBS) of their first-round series. The series is tied 1-1 after Seattle earned an unexpected split in Denver against the defending Stanley Cup champions. Those who do fill Seattle’s home building on Saturday night will be getting rewarded with the next chapter in the cit...
