Editor's Note: The video above shows KXAN Live's top headlines for Aug. 15, 2023TRAVIS COUNTY, Texas (Nexstar) — A state district judge is hearing arguments Tuesday and Wednesday to determine whether a new law that will soon ban transgender youth from receiving certain health care options should be blocked before the law goes into effect.Five Texas families with transgender children as well as three doctors filed suit in July, marking the first legal challenge to Senate Bill 14 — a bill passed this legislative session that will prohibit transgender minors from getting healthcare to assist in their gender transition. That includes puberty-blocking medication, hormone therapies or surgeries. AUSTIN (KXAN) — A majority of adults are feeling the impacts of a substance abuse crisis in the country, according to a new survey released by Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) researchers. With overdose deaths surging across the U.S. and in Travis County, two-thirds of adults surveyed said that they or a family member have at one point been addicted to alcohol or drugs, become homeless because of an addiction or went to the emergency room, were hospitalized or died because of substance abuse, the survey found. Further, about three in ten adults say they or a family member have been addicted to opioids – legal or illegal – at some point. The Williamson County Game Wardens received a report of a drowning at the lake on Sunday, according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, which investigated the drowning.TPWD said the person was swimming after his boat that had drifted away while he was standing in shallow water. He went underwater and did not resurface. WARSAW, N.Y. (WIVB) — Over $200,000 worth of allegedly stolen gold bars were found during a traffic stop in Wyoming County last month, according to the Wyoming County Sheriff's Office. On July 25, deputies said the bars were found during a routine traffic stop on State Route 20A near Toolhouse Road in the Town of Warsaw. A search found a backpack full of gold on the front seat of a vehicle being driven by 28-year-old Jaspreet Singh of Queens. The gold was made out to be worth $208,226, and multiple torn UPS packages with the name of an elderly Orchard Park man on them were discovered in the backseat.Courtesy: Wyoming County Sheriff's OfficeSingh denied ownership of the gold and was released from the traffic stop, deputies said. Around 12:30 p.m. on Friday, a hiker from Connecticut was found with an unstable lower leg injury along a trail. The assistant ranger splinted the ankle and was joined by fellow rangers to help the 49-year-old to Lake Colden Outpost, where she was transferred to hospital care by helicopter.Lake Colden is located by Mount Colden and the Avalanche Pass Trail. ST. LOUIS - Back-to-school time has arrived. This week or next week marks the start of a new school year for hundreds of districts around Missouri. Depending on where your children live in the Show Me State, they could be preparing for the traditional five-day school week or possibly a shortened four-day school week. Chances are, if your children live in the St. Louis area, they will not have that extra day off school. Four-day school weeks are becoming popular in some parts of Missouri, particularly rural counties, to combat teacher shortages statewide. ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. - A teenager faces felony charges nearly half a year after a deadly shooting in St. Charles County, one that followed plans to meet for a marijuana purchase and stage a robbery. Prosecutors have charged Trevon Gully, 18, with one count of second-degree murder, first-degree attempted robbery and armed criminal action in the investigation. Road rage mystery solved as ghost driver gets prison time According to the St. Charles County Prosecuting Attorney's Office, the Juvenile/Family Court ordered certification on Monday, so Gully will be tried as an adult in court. Gully and another suspect reportedly met the victim in the City of St. Charles in February 2023. Investigators say there were plans to purchase marijuana, but also pull off a robbery.
