Need another reason to celebrate today? Today is a celebration of math that can also trickle down to dessert!March 14 is celebrated by mathematicians because the numbers “3-14” represent the ratio of a circumference of a circle to its diameter, which is approximately 3.14159. The uniqueness of this calculation is that it doesn’t end at “59” but has been calculated to more than 50 trillion digits beyond the decimal point.Pi Pie, created at Delft University of Technology, applied physics, seismics and acoustics (Courtesy of Wikipedia Commons)Pi (a Greek symbol) is the symbol used in math to represent the unique value. The earliest observance of Pi Day was in 1988 by an employee of the San Francisco science museum, the Exploratorium. While mathematicians often discuss the significance of Pi on March 14, others may observe the holiday by eating and throwing pies! Pie, of course, is a homophone for the dessert we eat, sometimes every day!If you miss today’s celebration, try again in Novem...Clemson’s Bresee continues on NFL path after sister’s death

Bresee missed four games because of 15-year-old Ella’s passing and a troubling kidney infection in October that sapped his strength and scared his family about whether his health was at risk. Through it all, Bresee leaned on the game he’s played since he was five. “Football was my escape for a lot of things,” he said last month. “Having my teammates, my family, my coaches, a lot of support around me was definitely crucial during that time.” Bresee, the 6-foot-5, 298-pounder, lifted weights, ran short-shuttle and three-cone drills and did defensive line workouts for personnel from all 32 pro teams including Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin, New York Giants defensive coordinato...Lindsay Lohan announces pregnancy in Instagram post

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Federal Reserve is facing stinging criticism for missing what observers say were clear signs that Silicon Valley Bank was at high risk of collapsing into the second-largest bank failure in U.S. history. The Fed was the primary federal supervisor of the bank based in Santa Clara, California, that failed last week. The bank was also overseen by the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation.Critics point to many red flags surrounding Silicon Valley Bank, including its rapid growth since the pandemic, its unusually high level of uninsured deposits and its many investments in long-term government bonds and mortgage-backed securities, which tumbled in value as interest rates rose.“It’s inexplicable how the Federal Reserve supervisors could not see this clear threat to the safety and soundness of banks and to financial stability,” said Dennis Kelleher, chief executive of Better Markets, an advocacy group.Wall Street traders and industry analysts “hav...Where is the best pie in Denver metro area?

STRASBOURG — The leaders of the two largest political groups in the European Parliament traded barbs Tuesday over the Spanish government’s stance on Ukraine.Spanish Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is preparing to send Leopard tanks and more weapons to Ukraine, despite opposition from the far-left Podemos, the junior partner in the ruling coalition, which has warned this will only escalate the war and has pressed for peace talks.Manfred Weber, the leader of the center-right European People’s Party, said at a press conference that the tensions inside the government in Madrid could mean problems when Spain takes over the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU in July.“I would ask that Sánchez clarifies what is the opinion of the Spanish government in regard to Ukraine. We cannot accept any kind of uncertainty in such a moment of history,” the German EPP leader said, referring to a series of votes in the Spanish parliament last week in which Podemos voted differently to the...Europe’s coronavirus vaccine glut leads to call for contract transparency

Poland’s Health Minister Adam Niedzielski called on the European Commission on Tuesday to explain why it entered into a large COVID-19 vaccine contract at the height of the pandemic that has left the bloc on the hook for millions of unused doses. Niedzielski was answering a request for comment by POLITICO on Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s personal involvement in securing Europe’s biggest vaccine contract, for up to 1.8 billion doses of the BioNTech/Pfizer vaccine. The top EU official’s exact role in the negotiations has been an open question since the New York Times reported that she personally exchanged messages with Pfizer’s Chief Executive Albert Bourla in the run-up to the deal. The minister called the issue of how the negotiations were conducted “the next question mark.”“People are also asking questions in Poland. How it is possible that the number of doses is so high? … We want a straight explanation,” s...Latest news
