Since nobody else was home, Garcia took action.“I ran all the way from there and took the phone and called 911,” Garcia said. The first person at the door from t...TSA: Airport security finds loaded gun at Miami International Airport

A new State Police unit will work with other law enforcement agencies and community partners as Gov. Maura Healey’s administration looks to bolster strategies for addressing hate-based incidents tied to race, ethnicity and religion, among other biases. The Hate Crimes Awareness and Response Team (HART) will be tasked with improving statewide data collection efforts to identify patterns and trends, developing “advanced training” with the Municipal Police Training Committee, and improving law enforcement coordination at the federal, state and local levels, Healey announced Monday.Healey said HART is part of the commonwealth’s broader approach for deterring hate crimes and protecting at-risk individuals, as other law enforcement and state agencies, plus the state’s Task Force on Hate Crimes, continue their efforts to promote tolerance.“I think what today is about is a recognition of the moment that we are in as a country and as a commonwealth, and it ...Middleborough police arrest school counselor for allegedly dragging, striking 10-year-old student

The MBTA and the Department of Transportation will convert a group of conference rooms in their downtown Boston headquarters into temporary shelter for about two dozen families as the Healey administration continues to grapple with enormous strain on the emergency shelter system.Conference rooms on the second floor of the State Transportation Building will serve as a “short-term shelter location for up to 25 families to stay overnight until a more permanent location can be identified,” MBTA General Manager Phil Eng announced in an email to staff.Eng said he envisions the temporary shelter remaining open for about two weeks. Massachusetts National Guard personnel will set up the site in second-floor conference rooms at 10 Park Plaza, and an unnamed service provider will manage its operations, Eng said.“I have been asked if there are families needing clothing or other essentials. Family needs will be assessed, and if there is a need, we are considering launching a cl...20 Thanksgiving recipes, from turkey to casserole and pies

Nina Metz | Chicago TribuneSeason 6 of “The Crown” begins in Paris, the city of Princess Diana’s death. It’s night and the sidewalks are empty, save for a man walking his dog near the Pont de l’Alma tunnel. Suddenly a Mercedes flies by. Several motorbikes follow. A crash can be heard, followed by the distant sound of a car horn blaring, which then blends subtly into the notes of the show’s opening title music. It’s an unexpectedly elegant choice from a show that has, creatively and thematically, preferred the more straightforwardly pedestrian. The first four episodes of the final season, which Netflix is releasing in two parts, focus on the lead-up to that fateful moment in the summer of 1997.The core ensemble from Season 5 returns: Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth, Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip, Dominic West as Prince Charles, Khalid Abdalla as Dodi Fayed and Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana, who would spend much of her final summer on a yacht in the Mediterranean as a guest ...Star pitcher linked to Red Sox officially posted by Japanese team

The Orix Buffaloes officially posted Yoshinobu Yamamoto on Monday, kicking off a negotiation period that’s expected to culminate in the largest contract ever for a Nippon Professional Baseball player coming to Major League Baseball. The 25-year-old starting pitcher already has seven dominant NPB seasons under his belt and a well-stocked trophy case. He owns a 1.82 ERA over 897 innings, a solid 26.43% strikeout rate, and minuscule 5.9% walk and 1.03% home run rates. He’s coming off three consecutive Japanese Triple Crowns and Eiji Sawamura Awards (akin to MLB’s Cy Young Award) and won back-to-back Pacific League MVP in ‘21 and ‘22. As members of Team Japan, he and Red Sox outfielder Masataka Yoshida took home the gold at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.Major League clubs have until Jan. 4, 2024 to lock him down. If he doesn’t sign by that time – which seems highly unlikely – he’ll return to the Buffaloes for the 2024 season.Though the Buffaloes are almost certain to lose their ace by th...Callahan: Let Malik Cunningham compete for the Patriots’ starting QB job

Bill Belichick allowed his assistants roughly 36 hours of vacation over the bye week.Maybe a little more time could have helped clear their heads.Offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien indicated Monday that Belichick has yet to decide on a starting quarterback. You’ll remember Belichick pulled Mac Jones near the end of the Patriots’ last loss, a 10-6 international embarrassment that Jones’ replacement, Bailey Zappe, capped with a mind-numbing interception. O’Brien hinted this week’s starter may not be named until the staff sees who performs best in practice. But, be honest: how much do you care? What more tired topic is there than the Patriots’ quarterback situation, a morass of bad passers handcuffed to one of the NFL’s least talented rosters?Jones has been benched three times. Zappe is the least accurate quarterback in the league this season, per Pro Football Focus. Third-stringer Will Grier might have less game than the 40-year-old virgi...Thanksgiving in San Diego: Where to find free Thanksgiving meals
