LOUIS - A former employee of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department appeared in federal Monday and admitted to striking and injuring a jail inmate.Prosecutors with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Missouri said Edward Barber, 42, was working as a prisoner processing clerk at the St. Louis Justice Center on July 11, 2019, when the incident occurred.An inmate struck another processing clerk and had to be restrained by a corrections officer, who deployed pepper spray. The inmate complied, was handcuffed, and then led back to a cell by Barber and a corrections officer. A Jefferson County judge on Friday sentenced two men to prison for their role in a deadly street-racing crash two years ago.Shimpson Huynh, 31, and Adrian Lau, 22, were street racing on Nov. 14, 2021, when Huynh’s vehicle hit a car driven by Annika Williams, 21. She later died.A jury in February found Huynh guilty of vehicular homicide, among a host of other charges. He was sentenced to six years in prison — the maximum allowable sentence, the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office said in a news release Monday.Lau, in a separate trial, was found not guilty of vehicular homicide, prosecutors said. He was convicted on counts of speed contest, speeding and careless driving.
