A new wildlife district ordinance that would regulate residential development in parts of Los Angeles passed in committee on Tuesday, but some homeowners are wary of the ordinance’s limitations and fear that the bill could adversely affect their property values. The bill impacts hillside communities in between Griffith Park and the 405 Freeway, including Sherman Oaks, Hollywood Hills and Bel Air. Included in the ordinance are limits on how much of a homeowner’s property can be covered with a home and how much fencing, if any, could be put up around the property’s perimeter. Proponents of the bill say that it will help curb the expansion of mega-mansions, whose construction projects can have drastic effects on the surrounding wildlife and their habitat. “With those huge projects comes a lot of grading, a lot of impacts to the neighborhood and a lot of impacts to the wildlife,” said 5th District Councilmember Katy Yaroslavsky. “What this ordinance does is say ...

Bryce Harper’s power dip has the Phillies’ slugger off his average homer pace

Published Thu, 06 Mar 2025 17:47:29 GMT

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Bryce Harper had good reason his home run drought extended one more day.Rain wiped out the Phillies game against the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday night. So, Harper will wait until at least Thursday, when the Phillies try again against the Braves, to try and go deep for the first time in 21 games (May 25) and 97 plate appearances. That was back when the Phillies played nothing like a team about to go on a 13-3 run that again brought a run toward a playoff spot into view for the National League champions. Back when having Harper in the lineup still seemed like a medical marvel.Oh, Harper has contributed plenty to the Phillies’ torrid pace. That’s what two-time NL MVPs do.Harper is still hitting .301. He’s slashing .309/.402/.434 with 27 runs and 13 extra-base hits in his last 40 games. And his modest four-game hitting streak comes on a robust 7-for-18 effort. But, about that home run drought.“Harp hasn’t gotten on a streak yet,” manager Rob Thomson mused Wednesday, th...

Published Thu, 06 Mar 2025 17:47:29 GMT

DENVER (AP) — An eclectic crowd of thousands — podcasters, vendors, startups, seekers — swarmed a psychedelics conference in Denver this week to experience everything from a dimly lit hall packed with kaleidoscope art and a wide-ranging lineup of speakers from a former Republican governor to NFL star quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The conference, put on by a psychedelic advocacy group, took place months after Colorado’s voters decided to join Oregon in decriminalizing psychedelic mushrooms. While it’s a sign of growing cultural acceptance for substances that proponents say may offer benefits for things like post-traumatic stress disorder and alcoholism, medical experts caution that more research is needed on the drugs’ efficacy and the extent of the risks of psychedelics, which can cause hallucinations.Rodgers, who’ll soon debut with the New York Jets after years with the Green Bay Packers, spoke Wednesday night with podcaster Aubrey Marcus. Rodgers described taking ayahuasca with his te...
