Ask Amy: A hurting young girl is in need of a good book

Dear Amy: My 8-year-old niece is having trouble coping with and sorting out her feelings. She is confused by her mother’s abandonment of the family home and by her mother’s very erratic behavior. One moment, her mother makes scenes over her two children not loving her, and then the next moment she is sending them out of the house on their own in a strange town while she spends time with her boyfriend (four boyfriends so far since the marriage breakup a year ago).Mom blames everybody (including her children) for not loving and respecting her.In spite of this, my niece desperately wants her parents to come together again. She has lost her self-confidence and blames herself for any failure or frustration. She is very bright, but her schoolwork is suffering. My sister and brother-in-law (and the girl’s father) would like appropriate books to read to her.Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.— Retired University LibrarianDear Librarian: A great source for recommendations is...96% of young people in the EU uses the internet daily

Unlucky Louie, his wife and two of their kids have minor ills that require medication, and there are medicine bottles all over the place at his house.“I goofed and took a wrong med this morning,” Louie told me.“Are you feeling all right?” I asked.“The good news,” Louie said, “is that I won’t have a problem with fleas and ticks for three months.”I don’t know whether Louie had an adverse reaction, but he booted today’s 3NT. When West led a spade, East put up the queen, and Louie took the king and led the nine of diamonds to finesse. MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Catalina Usme scored early in the second half and Colombia edged Jamaica 1-0 on Tuesday to advance to the Women’s World Cup quarterfinals for the first time. Colombia will face European champion England on Saturday at Stadium Australia in Sydney. England advanced on penalties after a scoreless draw with Nigeria on Monday night. Usme yelled in celebration after trapping a long pass from Ana Guzman and calmly finishing in the 52nd minute. It was the first goal Jamaica conceded in the tournament. Teenage star Linda Caicedo had opportunities but wasn’t able to add to Colombia’s tally in a tough, physical encounter. Las Cafeteras, making their third World Cup appearance, also reached the Round of 16 in 2015 but were stopped in a 2-0 loss to the United States. The Jamaican women were in the knockout round for the first time in just their second appearance in the tournament. The last time Alabama was ranked lower than No. 3 in the preseason AP Top 25, Nick Saban had not yet won a national championship with the Crimson Tide. There is a very real possibility that when the new preseason AP Top 25 is unveiled on Monday at noon Eastern, ‘Bama could be squeezed out of the top three. After all, the Tide went 11-2 and didn’t make the College Football Playoff in 2022 and then said goodbye to Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young and two-time national defensive player of the year Will Anderson Jr.Not exactly cause for alarm in Tuscaloosa, but for a program with six national titles in the last 14 years — and five of the last seven preseason No. 1 rankings — there are more unknowns than there have been in a while.“Our team seems to be pretty hungry this year and motivated,” coach Nick Saban said during SEC media days. “Like all teams, we probably have some issues that are created by graduations and people leaving the program. Obviously, the No. 1 thing that ...Latest news
